Sectors
What to invest in
-
Oil palm
One of Indonesia’s main oil palm provinces. New licences in primary forest and peat have been halted since 2019, so most deals are producing estates or the companies that hold them.

Property
Pontianak is the centre for trade, hotels and services, where the Landak meets the Kapuas near the equator. Much of the ground is soft river silt or peat, so price the foundations before the plot.

Gold
Alluvial gold along the Kapuas system, in Bengkayang, Landak, Ketapang, Sambas, Sintang and Kapuas Hulu. Unlicensed digging covers about 70,600 hectares, so a licensed asset needs its ground checked.

Access
Ports, roads and industry
- Kijing terminal in Mempawah, a deep-water port opened on 9 August 2022 for containers, palm oil, bauxite and alumina.
- Supadio airport in Pontianak, and the Kapuas, 1,143 km long, still carrying goods to and from the interior.
- Land crossings into Sarawak at Entikong, Aruk and Nanga Badau.
- Alumina refineries at Ketapang, running since 2016, and Mempawah, commissioning since 2024, process the province’s bauxite.
Due diligence
Check before you buy
-
Check the forest-area map first. A certificate or a plantation licence doesn’t prove the land sits outside the forest estate.
Forest area status: the check that can sink a land deal -
On peat, check the fire record and the drainage. Burnt or drained peat brings fines on an estate and settles under a building.
Peat and fire: two risks to check on any estate -
Near gold digs, find out who works the ground. Unlicensed miners inside a licence area become the holder’s problem.
Illegal gold mining (PETI): what it means for a licence holder -
Meet the village as well as the seller. Customary land held by Dayak communities may not show on any certificate.
